Is this allowed? can some of it be transferred to me, as the parent? He’ll need some of it to avoid having any taxes payable

my son had a 5 figure medically required rhino and septoplasty. We have doctor notes showing an injury was sustained.

I’m hoping to successfully make the claim. He’s 18 years of age.

Does your employer have a group plan? Group plans allow for employees to declare their adult children as dependants until 25 years old provided some conditions are met, like full-time secondary education or disabilities.

Also, in your tax form, there is a section for you to declare if you are a caregiver.

Keep in mind that you can claim for a 12 month period ending in the tax year that you claim the expenses.

We did this two years ago. Claiming for a twelve month period was more advantageous than claiming for medical expenses incurred within the Jan 1-Dec 31 calendar tax year.

It was the first time we had ever claimed what was for us a large amount. It prompted a CRA desk audit. If you do claim, keep and arrange your supporting docs in preparation for what is probably an inevitable CRA desk audit request for you to provide receipts.

I wondering if studiotax is smart enough to allow transfers between adult children and parents.
From what I‘ve read, my adult child can transfer me some of the medical expense.

I am not a tax expert and usually rely on my tax software to allocate who should claim (spouse or I) when doing our joint return.

Perhaps someone with some tax knowledge can explain the tip from the H&R block link. I know many credits must be claimed by the lower earning spouse. ex. daycare etc. Wouldn't you want to reduce the higher income before the lower? Is there instances where the tip provided would not apply?

If the child has a medical expense and is older than 18 at the end of the year, and is a dependent, then this would be done on line 33199 of the federal return for the parent, after completing the child's return.

The parent can claim the expense minus the lesser of [$2421 and 3% of the dependent's net income]
For emphasis note the child's tax return is prepared first to determine the net income and the eligible amount.

The $2421 may be different depending on the tax year. That was the amount for 2021 tax year. Furthermore this amount may be different for the province as well.
