RSP Deposit Type - Interactive Brokers

Hi,

I have an Interactive Brokers RRSP account and I'm trying to make a deposit/contribution.

On the deposit screen for the RRSP account. There is a row "RSP Deposit Type", I select "Contribution" from the drop down and then it asks for a year. 2016 or 2015.

Does anyone know what this is? What year do I select?

Is the year just ignored in the system for Canadians since that is a US thing?

Unusual for them, their support hasn't been able to answer this yet for me.

Weird ... I've never been asked for year when making RRSP contributions at this time of the year. The only question I've seen people post about is "individual RRSP or spousal RRSP".

CRA won't care as the tax return will tell them what year it was recorded and what year the deduction was applied to.

I'd don't see how making a choice is going to matter so I'd select 2015 and be done with it.

Cheers
Finally got a straight answer from IB.

"You may select year 2015 or 2016 in the case of RRSP there is no difference. IB will supply a contribution slip which you can claim for 2015 or 2016 when doing your taxes."
I wonder why the year selection is there at all. Either the contribution applies to one year or the contributor can record on their tax return which year they want it applied to.

Or to put it another way ... is there anything IB can use the year for?

Cheers
