Hi all,

I really want to start getting into my investment career. I know quite a bit of the generic concepts, but do feel like I should learn a lot more before starting to buy and sell various stocks/ETFs/etc.

I can't remember the title of the book, but I believe it was "Canadian Investing for Dummies". I read this book a couple of years ago and picked up a recommended Technical Analysis book as well but haven't gotten around to it. I feel this book was a mistake to purchase and that I need to understand a few other fundamentals first.

I'm looking for a book that provides a little more details than the Dummies book (this book talked about types of stocks, how to choose a broker, etc) but more generic than technical analysis. I'd like to find tips on different investment strategies, potential ways to narrow down your portfolio, potential things to look for when investing in stocks (reading balance sheets, different ratios, etc).

Sorry if this is a vague question. I'm just trying to find a good recommended book to help me become a little more knowledgeable.

Thanks!

Fundamental Analysis for Dummies
I've personally read through this book and found it a lot more useful than many of more popular investing books since it gets into specifics rather than than broad wishy washy generations. Go to your local book store/library and flip through it, if it is too simplistic for you check out...

Securities Analysis and Business Valuation
I'm almost through this book and would recommend it to everyone who wants to do active investing. It is for intermediate readers and gives you a very comprehensive and specific primer on how to analyze companies. The biggest advantage is that it was written after the financial crisis so there are no ridiculous lessons based on the height of the tech or real estate bubbles. It takes into account all of the stuff that has been in the financial news within the past few years.
