I like to do screening steps as soon as possible early on.

Is it OK by Alberta/Canadian law to ask:

+ Are you employed and current income
+ Have you ever been evicted?

Also is there any danger of asking these questions via email?

Thanks!

There is nothing illegal about asking questions. You can't legally force people to answer certain ones, nor can you "officially" base your decision to rent to them based on certain questions (such as race, sexual preference, etc.).

There may be some privacy issues that could, in an extreme case, come up by the way you handle the information (so there could be a potential issue with email), but personally I wouldn't worry about it. They'd have to prove negligence while knowingly having sent an email which everyone should know is not secure. The privacy laws are written in a pretty stupid manner, the way I read them it's almost impossible to not violate them, but there is no monetary benefit to the person complaining, the penalties are all fines which go to the government, so I doubt many would sue in the first place.

There are numerous links under the legislation tab for human rights, privacy, personal information protection etc pertaining to being a landlord.
