Brand exposure works in very subliminal ways. They are buying/selling attention. Even if it doesn't generate a trackable sale today, brand exposure can influence a decision later simply because you've heard of it even if you don't remember where. You may get hit with brand exposure from many different angles that add up
I use Brave browser and I think the model makes sense but needs work. I don't see any ads on CMF for example but I earn about $20/month in BAT (location and exposure dependent) Basically they cut out the middle man (VerticleScope inc this case) and the advertiser pays me directly for my attention.
There are apps coming that will let local advertisers pay smartphone users directly for notifications/ads
