This probably gets asked a lot but I'm wondering what would be the best portfolio company in the Greater Montreal area. It's for my mom, who's retired and has been deeply disappointed with her current investing company

Your thoughts on this much appreciated

I haven't used them myself, but PWL Capital operates in Ottawa and Montreal.

However, they have minimum amounts for clients. I don't know what the minimum is, but it could be 500k or 1m. I've spoken with a few of their people. One thing I like about them is that they pursue low-fee index investing and don't pretend that they can beat the market. They're very open about their philosophy, and you can listen to their podcast where they explain why they pursue low-fee index investing.

Other possibilities are Mawer and Steadyhand. These have pretty good mutual funds at low cost, but again they have minimum thresholds for taking clients.

Then the suggestions in post #2 make sense. The best one can hope for is a firm that publicly at least appears to have a conscience in doing what is right for the client. Whether any of these options can include a fiduciary obligation to the client (as compared to their firm) is another question.
